Release & Rebirth
Becoming - Relieved
The sculpture Relieved emerges from Quinn’s confrontation with despair in life, asking: if death promises release, what is the face of suffering while alive? Language falters in describing such a state, and so the figure appeared—unfinished, incomplete, demanding a ritual.
Quinn created that ritual through a four-hour performance in which the sculpture was gradually dissolved by a contraption accompanied by an original piano composition. This act became the basis of a video work. When played forward, it speaks of exhaustion, silence, and release; reversed, it transforms into an image of renewal, shifting despair into the possibility of rebirth.
Becoming - Rebirth
This video work derives from Quinn’s sculpture Relieved, expanding its emotional weight into a four-hour durational ritual. Through a self-constructed contraption and an original piano composition, the sculpture was gradually dissolved into mud — a performance of release from pain and despair. Yet when the video was reversed, both sound and image shifted: the suffocating atmosphere lifted, and the work became a vision of rebirth and spiritual redemption.
